Moving can be a very stressful process. You’re worried about packing, transporting, and unpacking everything you own. The last thing you need is to be scammed by a dishonest moving company. Unfortunately, this is more common than you think, and a scam can cost you tens of thousands of dollars. However, you can take steps to protect yourself and your belongings. Read on to learn how to avoid a moving scheme.

Research the company thoroughly

Before hiring a moving company, do some research to ensure that the company is legitimate. Look for online reviews, check their website and social media pages, and ask for references. A reputable moving company should be licensed, insured, and have a physical address. If a company has no physical address or website, it is a red flag.

Get multiple quotes

It is important to get at least three quotes from different companies. This will give you an idea of what a reasonable price is for the cost of your move. Be wary of companies that offer a price that seems too good to be true. This is often a tactic to lure you into signing a contract and then adding on hidden fees later.

Never pay upfront

A reputable moving company will never ask for payment upfront. You should only pay for services once they have been completed to your satisfaction. Never give a deposit or payment in cash. Use a credit card so you have some protection if anything goes wrong.

Read the contract carefully

Before signing a contract, read it thoroughly. Make sure you understand the terms and conditions and that there are no hidden fees. If there is something in the contract that you do not understand, ask for clarification. If the company refuses to explain, it is a red flag.

Make an inventory

Before the moving company arrives, make an inventory of all your belongings. Make sure to note the condition of everything. This will help you keep track of everything and make sure nothing goes missing during the move. It will also make it easier to file a claim if something goes missing or is damaged during the move.
